Discover New England and Connecticut with Roisin Carbery from American Sky

Comprised of six states, New England has increased in popularity for Irish tourists over the years and it’s no surprise why. From lush landscapes to bustling cities, Connecticut has something to offer every type of tourist. To make things even better, Connecticut is easily accessible from Ireland with direct flights from Aer Lingus from Dublin to Bradley International Airport in Hartford. Roisin Carbery from American Sky travelled to Connecticut via Bradley International Airport and had a great time. Read on to find out all she got up to…

Roisin began her New England trip in Dublin Airport, Terminal 2, where she and her fellow travellers went through U.S. Pre-Clearance before boarding their Aer Lingus aircraft to Bradley International Airport. After a seven-and-a-half-hour flight, Roisin and her fellow travellers landed in Bradley International Airport, which Roisin was very impressed with “I would describe Bradley as the new gateway for New England. It’s an easier airport to get in and out of. It’s a great starting point for not just Connecticut, all the 6 states”.

During her time in New England, Roisin visited numerous tourist attractions including Yale University, where her and her fellow travellers took a tour around the campus to learn about its history and heritage “I loved going to visit Yale in New Haven. New Haven’s a lovely city also.”. Roisin was fascinated by the number of historic attractions and sites in the Connecticut area, “The history of the Mashantucket Pequot Tribe was an eyeopener. You could see where the 225 million went on the museum and the shopping at Tanger Outlet was really good as well. I loved West Hartford, steeped in history also”.

Another highlight of Roisin’s trip was her visit to the historic and charming waterfront village of Mystic. She thoroughly enjoyed exploring the town and would definitely recommend it as a tourist destination “I loved Mystic, absolutely loved it. I think I’ve seen the film Mystic Pizza 30 years ago, didn’t think I’d get to go see it for real”.

Roisin was very impressed with the accommodation options available throughout Connecticut, with something suitable for every type of holidaymaker “A high-end hotel would definitely have to be the Delamar and then top of my list would be the Homestead in Madison. I absolutely loved it”. Roisin was also very impressed with the abundance of delicious food options available “With regards to food, Connecticut has everything. From Barack Obama’s personal sushi chef to the first place where a hamburger was created to amazing seafood as we’re on the coast”.

Overall, Roisin had a fantastic time in Connecticut and would definitely recommend it as a destination for Irish holidaymakers via Bradley International Airport “I think Connecticut is very underrated. The people are wonderful. You get a countryside feel, but if feels like time gone by. It’s not just a stopgap to fly into Bradley and go to New York by train, which has been promoted to us for some reason, which I don’t know why. I think Connecticut is its own state with plenty to offer itself, but if to take in 2 weeks, you could take in all the rest of New England as well and Bradley is the best gateway to do that quickly and is a great base”.

Discover Connecticut with Mairead Keegan from Click&Go

In recent years, Connecticut, New England, has increased in popularity for Irish tourists and it’s no surprise why. From breath-taking countryside to vibrant cityscapes Connecticut has something to offer every type of holidaymaker. It gets better… Connecticut is also easily accessible from Ireland with direct flights from Aer Lingus from Dublin to Bradley International Airport in Hartford. Mairead Keegan from Click&Go travelled to Connecticut via Bradley Airport and had a great time. Continue reading to find out everything she got up to…

Mairead’s New England trip began in Dublin Airport, Terminal 2, where she and her fellow travellers went through U.S. Pre-Clearance. From here, Mairead and her group boarded their Aer Lingus aircraft and took the seven-and-a-half-hour flight to Bradley International Airport. Mairead had a great experience at Bradley International Airport “Arriving into Hartford into Bradley International Airport was seamless. A taxi journey away into Hartford. Definitely getting the holiday off to a great high-end start”.

While visiting Connecticut, Mairead and her group experienced a number of activities, including a visit to the village of Mystic, one of Connecticut’s premier destinations, which Mairead thoroughly enjoyed.  “We pulled up to Mystic Seaport, a beautiful new state-of-the-art building, but designed around more than authenticity. When we arrived in and the guide said we’ve got an hour and a half here, I thought to myself, okay, that’s a long time for here. And then you just go out the back door and it just opens up along the riverfront, and I was not expecting what you’ve got there, the facilities that they’ve got there, and how they recreate the history. It’s a living museum. We were very lucky that they were working on the Mayflower, too. So that was definitely I wasn’t expecting, you would easily spend a day there, without a doubt”.

While you may not associate Connecticut with great wine, Mairead and her fellow travellers were pleasantly surprised when they enjoyed a trip to a Connecticut vineyard “Wonderful wine, it was so relaxed. It was breath-taking, it really was. And again, it was the welcoming that we got, and then just seeing it as other opportunities that are there in terms of as a wedding venue. What an amazing wedding venue. You know, getting married abroad is becoming very popular and a lot less expensive than having a wedding at home”.

Mairead and her group delved into some U.S. history on their trip and visited Mark Twain’s house, which Mairead was very impressed with “The history behind it, and just the house itself. You don’t associate the U.S. with great history, because they’ve got a short history, but this trip, we just went beyond that and behind it.

During her trip to Connecticut, Mairead was very impressed the broad range of accommodation in Connecticut, with something suitable for all types of travellers, “I loved the accommodation, the variations in accommodation. You have bed and breakfast, but not the typical bed breakfast that we think of. It was a home away from home with the highest standard of furnishings, comfort. You’re wrapped up in warm hospitality with great hosts that invite you into their home. So, we have that on top of your authentic hotel accommodation with the sweeping staircases, and then we have your chain of Hilton accommodation, but they have the Connecticut twist on it, which meant it wasn’t mass market, it had its own style, it had its own welcoming hospitality, with the comforts that you know and expect from Hilton”.

Overall, for Mairead, her trip to Connecticut exceeded her expectations “What I loved was in the three days, everything we did completely turned my preconceptions of it as a destination upside down on its head. It’s not a sleepy destination with what I thought. It has amazing attractions, it has amazing history that it showcases extremely well, and it is authentic U.S.A. with the amazing food to match”.  Mairead recommends Connecticut as a fly/drive holiday “The length of stay would be solely dependent on how much the customer had timewise on their hands, because then you would adapt it to that. If I was doing it myself, I would give myself probably seven to ten days, spending two or three nights in the different areas”.

Michael explains how he Overall, Michael had a great experience in Connecticut, he especially loved the food and found the people very friendly, “Highlights, I suppose, across the board were the people, which kind of surprised me, we’re used to American, arriving in New York and it’s all go, go, go, go, go. Amy’s holiday began in Dublin Airport, Terminal 2, where her and her fellow travellers went through US Pre Clearance. Amy and her group were kindly upgraded to Business Class by Aer Lingus so, before departure, they relaxed in the Aer Lingus lounge, 51st & Green, where they enjoyed some pre-flight food and drinks. Amy thoroughly enjoyed her business class experience on the new Aer Lingus A321, “The entertainment onboard was really great, I watched a couple of movies, had some nice food, couple of drinks and then settled down. I had a few hours’ sleep and it was great feeling refreshed when we landed in Hartford, Connecticut in Bradley Airport”. After a seven-and-a-half-hour flight, Amy touched down in Bradley International Airport. The quaint and convenient size of the airport makes it very attractive to travelers, including Amy, “It is a really easy airport to navigate round. We were from the gate to our transfer in about 20 minutes max”.

For the first part of their trip, Amy and her group stayed in the D. Hotel, Holyoke, “we had two nights in the D hotel, and it was nice out in the countryside.”. Here, the gang enjoyed some activities, like white water rafting with Zoar Outdoor, before visiting the Yankee Candle Village, the largest Yankee Candle store in the world!

After this, Amy and her group travelled to Springfield, where they stayed in the newly built, MGM Hotel “the MGM had a completely different atmosphere, so really something for everybody. We had the outdoors, plus you had the city vibe and the casino”. In Springfield, Amy and her fellow travellers visited some of the quirky museums that Western Mass is famous for, such as the Amazing World of Dr. Suess and the Basketball Hall of Fame. The gang also attended the Big E, the annual New England State Fair, which Amy says was the highlight of her trip, “My highlight would have been the Big E. There’s a real carnival kind of atmosphere and loads of food, drink. It’s a really, really good day out.

Overall, Amy had a great experience in Western Mass and really recommends the region as a holiday destination “There’s definitely something for everybody. I think there’s really something for families with older teenagers with the outdoor activities and really for couples as well. I think it’s a good place for starting for your New England fly drive. Catherine’s adventure began in Dublin Airport Terminal 2, where she and her fellow travellers went through US Pre-Clearance. Catherine and her group were delighted to be upgraded by Aer Lingus to Business Class before flying direct to Bradley International Airport on the new Aer Lingus A321, “We were on their new aircraft, which was a really smooth and pleasant journey. And we also had the privilege of getting upgraded to business class, which was a lovely experience”.

Aer Lingus Bradley International Airport

After a seven-and-a-half-hour flight, Catherine and the gang landed in Bradley International Airport and arrived in the baggage hall within 10 minutes due to the quaint and convenient size of the airport. From here, Catherine and her fellow travellers were driven the D. Hotel, “The hotel was really enjoyable. There’s a great Irish connection, the owner is from Kerry. We met a lot of the locals, as well and overall, everyone that we met was really welcoming and the hospitality was fantastic.”

On their first day, Catherine and her group went to the Yankee Candle Village, the largest Yankee Candle store in the world. Catherine had a great time here “it’s a really big store with every candle imaginable and every scent. They also, had a really good themed Christmas department in the store, which is famous over there and really big with the locals. Especially, at Christmas time with kids and families”. After a leisurely morning, Catherine and her group got their adrenaline pumping at Zoar Outdoor where they went white water rafting which Catherine thoroughly enjoyed “the scenery was spectacular as we went in down the river. It was a bit scary at times, but overall, a really good experience. In the same area you can also do ziplining and canoeing. So, there’s great facilities for any outdoor enthusiasts.”

White water rafting at Zoar Outdoor

After two nights at the D Hotel, Catherine and her group left Holyoke and travelled to Springfield where they stayed for two nights in the MGM Hotel, a newly built, modern hotel boasting spacious rooms and a central location “The style is very contemporary, but they brought loads of different elements of Springfield into the hotel. Had lots of odd memorabilia and artefacts of the hotel. There were multiple restaurants, a casino of course, a pool and a spa”. In Springfield, Catherine and her fellow travellers went to some of the famous museums in the area, “The Basketball Hall of Fame was really, really interesting. We got to tour the hall and there were so many interactive, different things that you could do there, especially if you were kids. We also went to the Dr Seuss Museum which I really love because we always read Dr Seuss as kids so, it was really lovely to tour the museum and hear a bit about the man himself. Again, that was a really good activity for families and kids”. The group also went to the Forest Park, one of the largest urban parks in the US, overlooking the Connecticut River, which Catherine really liked “You could easily spend a day there. Lakes, lovely walks, parks for the kids, picnic areas and be really super in winter or summer for a day out”.

The basketball hall of fame Western Mass

The highlight of the whole trip for Catherine was attending the Big E, the annual New England State Fair, Catherine explains “It’s basically like the Irish Ploughing Championships, except maybe 10 times bigger. It was really a brilliant day and there was something for everyone. There were rides and different attractions and then they had loads of stalls. If you want to experience real American cuisine, the choice was phenomenal. They had giant turkey legs, cream puffs, which are famous over there. It was a really lovely atmosphere and then they finish off with live music and have a parade there every evening. We were lucky enough to be asked onto one of the floats, which was a really great experience”.

Western Mass with Louise Daly of Cassidy Travel via Bradley Airport

Located a stone’s throw from Bradley International Airport, the region of Western Mass is renowned not only for its unspoiled natural beauty but also its rich and diverse culture. Boasting a unique collection of museums, galleries, and gardens as well as a delicious selection of restaurants and dining options, Western Mass has something to suit every type of holidaymaker. In this blog, we talk to Louise Daly of Cassidy Travel who spent four days in Western Mass, flying direct from Dublin to Bradley International Airport with Aer Lingus.

Starting off her journey in Dublin Airport, Terminal 2, Louise and her fellow travellers were treated to an upgrade to business class with Aer Lingus, giving them access to complimentary food and drink in the 51st and Green area after security, an ideal way to relax before the flight. Louise was flying to BDL on the new Aer Lingus A320 Neo and really enjoyed her experience onboard “We were wined and dined for the whole flight, which was really good, and it was spotless! What I loved was it is way more relaxing, and you had loads of space and you feel refreshed getting off the flight”.

After a six-and-a-half-hour flight, Louise arrived into Bradley International and within just ten minutes was back down in the baggage hall. From here, the group travelled to the D. Hotel, located just 30 minutes from the airport.  Louise explains “the D. Hotel was perfect for families because the rooms were so big. The restaurant beside it was so nice, we had steak and chips there the first night and it was delicious. It’s also in a good location if you want to do adventuring”.

On their second day, Louise and her fellow travellers went to Zoar Outdoor to experience white water rafting and to the Yankee Candle Village which she thoroughly enjoyed “The Yankee Candle Village was real Christmassy and festive for the Halloween season as well, and you could see how many flavours they had, and if we wanted to make our own, we could if we wished or we could make wax moulds to bring home”.

After spending two nights in the D Hotel, Louise and her group travelled straight into the lively city of Springfield staying in the lovely, modern, one-year old MGM Springfield. Louise loved the location of the hotel “the MGM is in walking distance to the Doctor Seuss Museum, which is really good for families and also adults if they want to discover the history of Doctor Seuss.”. The MGM Springfield is ideally located just 20 minutes from the Hartford airport and Holyoke Mall, one of the largest shopping centres in all of New England!

The highlight of Louise’s trip to Western Mass was attending the Big E, New England’s great state fair, “this is like a huge fair-ground atmosphere, we were there four around eight hours or so, so what the highlight of that was, the CEO of the fair let us go on one of the floats, so we just threw our beads to the festival-goers. The food is really nice, they served lots of traditional New England foods, but even though if you are picky, they do something to suit you, which they did for me.”. Taking place annually across 17 days, the Big E is one of the biggest events in the Western Mass calendar, combining the music, food, culture, and fun of all six New England states.

Overall, Louise had a great time in Western Mass and her trip really demonstrated the diversity of activities available here, from water sports to festival fun and everything in between. Louise explains “The Western Mass is definitely a great destination for Irish visitors, the airport’s in a really good location, and it’s really good for fly drive, if you wanted to travel around Boston and the New England area”. 10 Reasons we love travel agents

What better way to celebrate Travel Agent Appreciation Day, than to write about the reasons we love travel agents and the lengths they go for us. Here at TTR we love travel agents and found it hard to whittle our list of 100 reasons down to just 10! Read on below to see why travel agents are our favourite types of people!

1. Always up to date

Is there a climate protest in London or an earthquake in Indonesia? Have countries re-opened their borders after the Covid-19 Pandemic or do tourists need a period of self-isolation on arrival?

These are the current events that many people overlook; travel agents keep an eye on happenings around the globe and use this information to make decisions on holiday destinations for their clients.

2. Relationships

As with any relationship, in time a travel agent gets to know you and your wants and needs from a holiday. Maybe you have certain medicines that need declaring or perhaps you have specific dietary requirements.

A simple phone call or email can become more than enough to create your next holiday without having to worry about the follow ups with airlines, airports or hotels.

3. Knowledge

Perceived knowledge of countries and places to travel to is becoming more and more prevalent in recent years, especially with the level of social media interaction the world now revolves around. Though your favourite travel blogger, or even a friend, may have put up posts of somewhere that looks amazing to you, remember, this is just a snap of a singular moment. In today’s climate, as travel rules and regulations change so rapidly, a travel agent’s knowledge is more important than ever.

Travel agents will be able to bring you through the ins and outs of what it takes to get there and help you understand if you will enjoy the journey or whether a different holiday is more suited.

4. More bang for your buck

Many people have the idea that travel agents are going to be more expensive to book with. In reality they can cost the same or even less than booking online with all the benefits of having an experienced travel booker to help you along the way.

Yes, most agencies will have a service fee but agents have access to real time information, meaning they can find the best deals available at the time of booking. Agents are also bonded, meaning you and your booking are protected, in the event of any travel disruptions.

10 reasons why we love travel agents

5. Save you time and effort

Planning a holiday isn’t easy, it can take hours of googling, comparing flights, locating hotels and that’s not even getting started on the bits and pieces you want to see and do on your trip.

Travel Agents travel the world experiencing hotels, restaurants, airlines, excursions, tours and so much more. If the agent you are booking with hasn’t experienced it, you can be sure they know somebody who has and will be asking their advice, meaning you can relax and wait for your itinerary to be made for you.

6. Help when emergency strikes

Travel agents are well equipped to deal with emergency situations should they arise. As we’ve all seen in recently, sometimes things go wrong, that’s just part of life.

Travel agents will always put your well-being first and try their best to get your holiday up and running again, by suggesting other options and getting any necessary changes made in the fastest way possible.

7. Exclusivity

Some companies offer tours or excursions solely through travel agencies meaning there is only one way to book them.

Looking to adventure to little know ruins of the Incas in Peru or exclusive sites of the Mayans in Mexico?  These are the type of things you won’t find just by looking it up online, but no doubt a travel agent has come across such adventures before.

8. Influence

Travel agents have spent years building relationships with hotel chains, airlines and many others over the years.

Whether you are trying to get into an exclusive hotel room or a private showing in a theatre, the odds are far more in your favour if your agent is making the inquiry on your behalf.

9. Budgeting

When an agent books your holiday you can rest assured you will know exactly what you are paying for and what you will need extra for.

Anything from a bag check-in fee with the airline to whether lunch is included on a tour is going to be looked into for you, meaning you will know exactly what you need to bring.

10. Agents are amazing

Rarely will you meet and agent who isn’t chatty, bubbly and just plain fun to be around. Coming from every walk of life, agents always have one thing in common, a passion for travel, something they are more than happy to share with you.
